Refurbishment of Hydro Power Plant Gihira

The mechanical equipment of the power plant has been facing significant wear issues for years. To counteract this and simultaneously enhance the performance of the turbines, Geppert Hydro has upgraded the key components to the latest state-of-the-art technology and implemented measures to improve wear resistance.

Extensive refurbishment measures were carried out on the turbines at the Gihira hydropower plant to better adapt the equipment to the challenges posed by sediment-laden water.

The machine sets, originally installed in the 1980s, were comprehensively modernized by Geppert Hydro. To implement a cost-effective solution while maximizing the plant’s potential, the existing spiral casing and embedded draft tube were retained. In contrast, the turbine cover, guide vane system including the adjustment mechanism, runner, and draft tube elbow were replaced.

To extend the service life of the new components, all critical parts were coated with HVOF coating, providing enhanced protection against sediment-induced abrasion.
